These miniature multi-layered pieces, or 'fragments', were made with silk fabric and fibres. Painting, printing, bonding, felting, burning, beading and gilding created their richly textured surfaces. I wanted each piece to have an intense, gem-like quality.
I have given each miniature a title which suggests what I see, but every viewer can make his or her own imaginative associations.
My initial inspiration was a visit to Venice, with its beautiful buildings distressed by age and water, its gilded and decorated surfaces miraculously surviving down many centuries.
Many associated ideas arrived as I worked; archaeological remains, maps, islands, the sea, treasure, corals, pearls, undersea-scapes, gemstones.
The framing of this set of work is done entirely with re-cycled materials. Some frames have been made up by professional framers from their off-cuts. I have bought many frames from charity shops and decorated them myself to complement the work. Venice, and our planet, are in peril; I feel satisfaction in re-using old materials in this way.
'Wonderful, like found objects from a better age'. Terry Fox, Cheshire Poet Laureate
