I'm happy to discuss ideas with you if you feel you might be interested in having a piece made for you. After Harvest (private collection)
This little embroidery, only a few square centimetres in size, is one of a series inspired by hot late summer days in Cheshire, when the harvest is safely in. The flat fields stretch away into the distance, marked with the traces of tractor trails through the stubble and the geometric bundled rolls of the harvested crop. |

Tuscan Landscape (artist's collection)
'Tuscan Landscape' was inspired by a large oil painting on canvas by my son Dan Milne. It was painted in Italy, looking across a landscape with ancient olive trees in the foreground. The beautiful colours and textures Dan created in his painting made me want to embroider the view; I miniaturised it considerably, as the embroidery is only a few inches square.
The embroidery appeared as 'Tree in Tuscany' in Sue Newhouse's book 'Hand-Embroidered Country Scenes', Search Press 1997. This how Sue described it: 'Layers of coloured chiffon, overlaid with straight stitch and a few French knot trees, are used to give texture and a subtle change of colours.' The 3-D tree in the foreground is made of stiffened and painted hessian strands, twisted together.

Lavender Field (private collection)
'Lavender Field' was exhibited at Cheshire Open Studios in 1995. Bob Bird wrote the following kind review in The Sentinel newspaper's arts page,'From the Gallery'.
'Jill Milne has embroidered a tiny image of the greatest simplicity that she calls Lavender Field. A central olive green tree is seen against a lavender blue sky at the edge of a warmer patch of a field striped in light gold. That is all it has and all it needs to exert its considerable charm.' |

Shingle Beach (private collection)
The shingle banks at Chesil and Abbotsbury on the Dorset coat inspired this small embroidery. The background silk is washed with gentle shades of pale grey. The trees and shingle are simple straight stitches and french knots in a palette of grey and gold, and the 3-D effect of grasses and driftwood in the foreground is created with stiffened threads and tiny pieces of broken coral. |

Shingle Garden (private collection)
This scene was inspired by Derek Jarman's magical garden which he created in the shingle around Prospect Cottage, his home at Dungeness in Kent. The garden combines plants natural to the area with sculptures made from shells, stones and found objects. My hand embroidery on painted silk includes raised elements on water-soluble fabric, wire, shells, stones and bark. |

Phil's Waterlilies (private collection)
Monet's late waterlily paintings inspired this image of pink lilies floating on the fragmented reflections of the lake. The background silk is coloured with randomly applied dyes in gem-like shades of amethyst, sapphire and emerald. Wisps of appliqued chiffon bring the lilies into 3-D. Appliqued silk fabric leaves and a few embroidery stitches add texture and depth. Because of the timeless appeal of Monet's work, the waterlily lake is a favourite subject for commissions. |

Giverny Lilies (private collection)
This embroidery is one of an ongoing series inspired by Monet's many evocative paintings of the waterlily lake in his garden at Giverny. It combines hand-painted silk, layers of transparent fabric, delicate threads and some appliqued elements.
'Giverny Lilies' was bought by a visitor to Cheshire Open Studios 2007. He wrote in my guest book: 'So lovely to see imagination manifested in unusual but identifiable art. Especially love the 3-D effects'

Christmas Rose (private collection)
The Christmas rose, also known as 'lenten rose' or 'hellebore', symbolises life in the dark time of the year when not much else flowers. Embroidered with delicate threads on hand-painted silk with appliqued silk leaves and petals to give a 3-D effect. |
